Storing Water for Emergencies

It’s that time of year again! Hurricane season in Florida—a five month period from June 1 to November 30 where we’re subject to tropical storms at any time. And with that comes the potential for power outages, debris, and even loss of running water.

By planning ahead and storing water for emergencies, you can have the peace of mind that comes with having fresh water to keep you hydrated and healthy if you get stuck in the house for an extended period of time.

How to Store Water for Emergencies

To ensure the quality and safety of your water, it’s essential that it’s stored securely. Properly storing water for emergencies means:

  • Keeping water bottles in a space that’s room temperature or cooler, dry, and away from sunlight
  • Using containers that have had no previous contact with chemicals
  • Keeping spring water no longer than a year, and tap water a maximum of six months (try labelling your bottles by date!)
  • Making sure your water supply is accessible at any time

Since tap water can easily be compromised in quality and safety as soon as the power goes out, bottled water is the recommended choice for homeowners in Florida. If you’re interested in storing water for emergencies in the Tampa area and want to be prepared no matter what, check out your water bottle options with Water Boy!

Wondering how much you need? The Department of Homeland Security recommends a minimum of one gallon per person, per day, with a three-day supply in total. Alternatively, the American Red Cross suggests the same amount of water per day, but with a two week supply in total (or 56 gallons of water for a family of four). Whether you want to take the conservative approach or stay prepared with a larger supply is up to you, but keep in mind that the number of hurricanes in 2014 is predicted to be slightly below average. The Weather Channel released an early outlook for 11 named storms, five of which are expected to be hurricanes, with two predicted to be major hurricanes.
